First Impressions: A Fate Inked in Blood

By Danielle L. Jension

Saga of the Unfated #1

Here’s the deal with First Impressions posts: I treat them like superlatives. Consider it a knee-jerk list of things that (for better or for worse) got my attention almost immediately in a book.

Disclaimer: I read multiple negative reviews before starting the book that triggered my “you aren’t going to tell me what to think” streak so now I’m predisposed to prove them wrong.

Most Memorable Quote

This one seems pretty obvious. It’s basically a bold call-to-action mixed with the sickest burn you could probably ever think to hurl at an undead solider. When I read it, I actually giggled.

Biggest Brat Energy

Freya – just stop being a twerp. It’s a good thing you (allegedly?) know how to fight because your whole vibe feels like a toddler saying “I can do it myself!”

Also…

Does the relationship between Freya and Bjorn come across to anyone else (at least initially) like some sort of weird brother/sister dynamic? It’s like a brat kink except she’s literally also his stepmother so you can’t deny that it feels a little incestuous.

Most Norse OORAH

An open letter to Jarl Snorri:

Still-Not-King Snorri,

While I am very impressed with your bigness and your gruffness and your super tough (first) wife… I can’t get you out of my head as a bit of a crayon-eater. There’s quite a bit of brutish stupid that comes across when you blindly follow your weak interpretation of a vague prophesy. If Theresa Caputo was in charge of the USMC, I imagine we’d have a similar situation.

That said, I don’t mind a bit of Devil Dog in a Jarl and I think it makes sense. Just please reign it in a bit and don’t go running into a brick wall just because someone throws sand on it and says “hit the beach,” eh?

With cautious curiosity,

Libby

Overall First Impression?

Not willing to take it on faith but curious enough to face the draug.
